I khòaⁿ khí-lâi hām chiàn-chêng sio-kāng; sīm-chì ká-ná khah tōa-kho͘. Lâng nā kā mn̄g, i kan-ta chhiò-chhiò, koh nāi-sim kái-soeh kóng, i thiàu-lo̍h óng Belzec ê kau-thong kang-kū, koh chhàng tī chi̍t-ê chng-kha. Sī siáng chhàng i, hām tī tó chi̍t-ê chng-kha, che i m̄-ài kóng. I ê chhiò-iông hām chiàn-chêng i khiā tī kūi-tâi āu-bīn bē ìn-hoe thang-lî pò͘ (cretonne) hām ba̍t-chit mî-pò͘ (percale) ê sî kāng-khoán. It-tit kàu yi kiâⁿ kàu lāu-su ê chhù, hut-leh teh chheh-khùi, lâng chiah bêng-pe̍k yi sī lāu-su ê bó͘. Sīm-chì kàu hit-sî, in iáu bē jīn-tit yi, in-ūi yi ta-pān chò khit-chia̍h chng kah ū-kàu sêng. Chi̍t-chiah bé-chhia chài i-seng tńg-lâi. I tī i ê pēⁿ-lâng, chi̍t-ê chng-kha cha-bó͘, ê gû-tiâu-ē ê tōng nih tó 9 kò goe̍h. Taⁿ i iáu bô hoat-tō͘ kiâⁿ-lō͘.
Hōe-kè-su hām in hāu-seⁿ, iáu-ū thì-thâu-sai hām in bó͘ lóng ùi chhiū-nâ nih ê chi̍t-ê am-thé (掩體, bunker) tńg-lâi. Thì-thâu-sai ê thâu-khak goân-pún chhut-miâ ê âng thâu-chang, taⁿ í-keng thuh kah ná chi̍t-lia̍p bowling kiû.
Múi-ji̍t hông-hun ê sî, ta-hòe seng-lí-lâng lī-khui chhù, kiâⁿ hiòng hóe-chhia-thâu khì.
Nā mn̄g i boeh khì tó-ūi, i tō kái-soeh kóng, "Goán kan-chhiú kin-á-ji̍t ē tńg lâi." Hóe-chhia iáu-bōe ūn-hêng.

Ji̍t-chí chi̍t-kang chi̍t-kang kòe, chheng-phang, bêng-liāng. Hóe-chhia koh ūn-hêng ah. Tìn nih ê lâng bô koh chhai-chhek kap kè-sǹg. Lông-hu ê bīn pe̍h kah ná sèng-chhan piáⁿ, í-keng khah chió chhut-hiān tī thang-á piⁿ.
Kan-ta hit-ê ta-hòe seng-lí-lâng -- i m̄-bat thêng-chí khì hóe-chhia-thâu pâi-hôe. I chóng-sī nāi-sim tī hia khiā, chhùi chhiò-chhiò. Kòe chi̍t-tōaⁿ sî-kan liáu-āu, mā bô lâng koh chù-ì tio̍h i ah.

2. 有 10 个人轉來 tō 通好辦祈禱
生理人到位, 這拍亂原本 ê 猜測和計算, 因為人人知影伊 hông chhōa 去無塊回頭 ê 所在. 伊看起來和戰前相仝; 甚至敢若較大箍. 人若 kā 問, 伊干焦笑笑, koh 耐心解說講, 伊跳落往 Belzec ê 交通工具, koh 藏 tī 一个庄跤. 是 siáng 藏伊, 和 tī 佗一个庄跤, 這伊毋愛講. 伊 ê 笑容和戰前伊徛 tī 櫃台後面賣印花窗簾布 (cretonne) 和密質棉布 (percale) ê 時仝款. 彼个笑容總是掛 tī 面, 毋過這予人起著驚, 因為 in 兜無別人活落來.

第一个查某人轉來 ê 時, 彼兩个米糧經銷商猶 teh 睏. 無人會認得彼个查某. 一直到她行到老師 ê 厝, 忽 leh teh chheh-khùi, 人才明白她是老師 ê 某. 甚至到彼時, in 猶袂認得她, in-ūi 她打扮做乞食裝甲有夠成. 她 bat tī Katholic 和 Orthodox 教堂頭前 pun, bat ùi 一个教堂 ê 市集流浪到另外一个教堂市集, ùi 一个市場到另外一个市場 kā 人看手相. Hiah-ê 攏是她隱身 ê 所在. Tī 她樸素 ê 頭巾下面是一个庄跤查某消瘦 ê 面.
眾人好奇, 問她: "是你 sioh?"

干焦彼个聲無變.
自 án-ne, 轉來六个人 ah. 日子繼續過, 花園 ê 花草變旺 mā 變青. 逐个攏真小心, 眾人 án-ne 講, in teh 等前線徙動 -- 已經恬靜真久, 進攻看是有可能. 毋過, 甚至 tī 進攻開始, 前線跳向西爿, mā 干焦 koh 幾个仔轉來.
一隻馬車載醫生轉來. 伊 tī 伊 ê 病人, 一个庄跤查某, ê 牛牢下 ê 洞 nih 倒 9 個月. 今伊猶無法度行路.
會計師和 in 後生, 猶有剃頭師和 in 某攏 ùi 樹林 nih ê 一个 am-thé (掩體, bunker) 轉來. 剃頭師 ê 頭殼原本出名 ê 紅頭鬃, 今已經禿甲 ná 一粒 bowling 球.
每日黃昏 ê 時, 焦貨生理人離開厝, 行向火車頭去.
若問伊欲去佗位, 伊 tō 解說講, "阮牽手今仔日會轉來." 火車猶未運行.
彼个農夫是虔誠 ê 人, 伊 lú 來 lú 濟時間徛 tī 窗仔邊, tī 遐連續徛幾若點鐘. 伊 teh 等第 10 个人, án-ne 通盡快 tī 猶太教堂廢墟來為被謀殺 ê 人祈禱.
日子一工一工過, 清芳, 明亮. 火車 koh 運行 ah. 鎮 nih ê 人無 koh 猜測 kap 計算. 農夫 ê 面白甲 ná 聖餐餅, 已經較少出現 tī 窗仔邊.
干焦彼个焦貨生理人 -- 伊毋捌停止去火車頭徘徊. 伊總是耐心 tī 遐徛, 喙笑笑. 過一段時間了後, mā 無人 koh 注意著伊 ah.

The arrival of the merchant upset the conjectures and calculations, since everyone knew that he had been taken away to the place from which there was no return. He looked just as he had before the war; he might even have put on some weight. When questioned, he smiled and explained patiently that he had jumped out of a transport to Belzec and hidden in a village. Who had hidden him, and in what village, he didn’t want to say. He had the same smile on his face that he used to have before the war when he stood behind his counters and sold cretonnes and percales. That smile never left his face, and it astonished everyone, because no one from this man’s family had survived.
For three days the grain dealers slept like logs.
They lay on the floor near their door, which was left slightly ajar, as if sleep had felled them the moment they walked in. Their high-topped boots were caked with dried mud, their faces swollen. The neighbours heard them screaming in their sleep at night.
The grain dealers were still asleep when the first woman returned. No one recognised her. Only when she reached the teacher’s house and burst out sobbing did they understand that she was his wife. Even then, they didn’t recognise her, so convincing was her beggar woman’s disguise. She had begged in front of Catholic and Orthodox churches, had wandered from church fair to church fair and market to market, reading people’s palms. Those were her hiding places. From beneath her plain kerchief peered the drawn face of a peasant woman.
They asked in amazement: ‘Is it you?’
‘It’s me,’ she answered in her low voice.
Only her voice was unchanged.
So there were six of them. The days passed, the gardens grew thick and green. They’re being careful, people said, they’re waiting for the front to move – it had been still for so long that the offensive seemed likely. But even when the offensive began and the front made a sudden jump to the west, only a few more came back.
A wagon brought the doctor back. He had lain for nine months in a hole underneath the cowshed of one of his patients, a peasant woman. He was still unable to walk.
The accountant and his son and the barber and his wife returned from a bunkers in the forest. The barber, who had once been known for his mane of red hair, was bald as a bowling ball.
Every day at dusk, the dry goods merchant left his house and walked towards the railway station.
When asked where he was going, he explained, ‘My wife is coming back today.’ The trains were still not running.
The farmer, a pious man, spent more and more time by his window; he would stand there for hours on end. He was looking for a tenth man, so that the prayers for the murdered might be said as soon as possible in the ruins of the synagogue.
The days kept passing, fragrant and bright. The trains began to run. The people in the town no longer conjectured and calculated. The farmer’s face, white as a communion wafer, shone less often in his window.
Only the dry goods merchant – he never stopped haunting the railway station. He would stand there patiently, smiling. After a while, no one noticed him anymore.
